What Some Michigan School Districts Provide

-Many districts, such as the Grand Rapids District categorizes and supports children with autism in a unique and appropriate manner. For example, here is their summary program on austism:

-It is the goal of the Grand Rapids Autism Program to prepare students to function in their future home, work and community environments. General education and special education instruction is tailored to meet the individuals need for improved language, social, vocational, recreation/leisure, and daily living skills.

-Self-contained classrooms for students with Autism are provided throughout the district. These classrooms are comprised of a teacher with an endorsement in teaching students with autism as well as a child care worker. There may be an average of 7 students per classroom in the district. Students receive intensive work in language, social skills, and sensory integration from ancillary staff.

Academic instruction ranges from the district general education curriculum to a functional curriculum for students with more severe impairment. A major component of instruction is Community Based Instruction (CBI).

-Similarly the Grosse Pointe School System program summary follows:

-Students with an autistic spectrum disorder have a lifelong developmental disability recognized by unusual patterns in thinking, socializing, body movement, and language and/or speech development. These individuals may have difficulty relating to others. They may insist on routine, are slow to develop communication patterns, have unusual responses to sensory stimuli, and exhibit repetitive play patterns and repetitive movements. GPPSS has a specific program tailored to meet the needs of our autistic students. Programming options begin at birth.
